Biography or History:
Corinne "Marti" Mackey was an African-American lesbian activist and writer. She founded LAGADU (Lesbians and Gays of African Descent United) in 1989, in response to frustrations that communities of color, especially Black LGBTQ folks, were not being adequately represented in local LGBTQ activism, spaces, and communities. She worked with the San Diego LGBT Center, the Human Dignity Ordinance Task Force, and was a volunteer instructor at the local police academy. Mackey was a long-time writer and journalist with a column Det Hoodoo in the Gay and Lesbian Nation and a contributor to the San Diego Reader. Mackey and Phyllis Jackson were long-time partners. She passed away from cancer at age 42.
