Scope and Content:
Denise Lisa photographed San Diego Democratic Club's third annual Freedom Banquet on September 10, 1983 at the Hyatt Islandia in San Diego, California. The banquet was a roast of Dr. David McWhirter, a researcher and clinician who studied the field of sexology and founder of the San Diego Clinical Institute of for Human Relationships. McWhirter was also the co-author of "The Male Couple." Some of the 400 attendees were: Reverend David Ferrell of Metropolitan Community Church, Evonne Schultz, Jess Jessop, Larry Kapiloff, Midge Costanza, Virginia Apuzzo, Drew Mattison, Jean O'Leary, Dr. Don Clark, Dr. Evelyn Hooker, Dr. Bruce Voeller, Rep. John Vasconcellos, Jim Bates, Mayor Tom Bradley (Los Angeles), Peter R. Chacon, Ken Cory, Mike Gotch, Celia Ballesteros, Bob Filner, Ardelia "DeDe" McClure, Wadie P. Denise Lisa was a local photographer for San Diego Pride, The Gayzette Magazine and Nexus Magazine. Nexus had a very short run of 7 issues, released from October 1983 to April 1984. Most of the photos and negatives are related to Nexus articles.
