The lunch counter at Big Kitchen Café in Golden Hill (San Diego) circa November 1983

A black and white photograph of the lunch counter at Big Kitchen Café in the Golden Hill neighborhood of San Diego. The photographer is standing at the right corner of the square-shaped lunch counter that attaches to a wall that has a doorway that allows staff to walk from the kitchen area to the service side of the counter. In the doorway stands Judy "The Beauty" Forman, the owner of the Café, who is a thin white woman with short, dark, curly hair and large, circular glasses. She is wearing a short-sleeve blouse which is tucked into a long, dark-colored skirt. The wall behind her is covered in knick-knacks on shelves, framed photographs, and two chalk boards (one on each side of the door). The left chalk board reads: "Special Reuben Samich [sic] $2.95." The right chalk board reads: "GOODIES: Peach cobbler, Blueberry cobbler, Cherry cobbler. Cheesecake [flavors]: amaretto, plain, orange blossom, chocolate chip." A mother and her child sit on the right side of the lunch counter; the mother is speaking to Judy. Behind them, two women (one with short hair and one with long, curly hair) sit in a booth. Most of the left side of the lunch counter is cut off by the camera angle, but visible is a person's arm holding an open newspaper with a stack of newspapers to their left, and a menu in front of them.
